Sardinia 1672 5 reales
The specimen shown was lot 144 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 750 euros (about US$1,237 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1672. Cagliari. 5 reales. Bonita pátina. Muy rara. MBC+. (Cagliari, Sardinia, five reales; nice patina, very rare, choice very fine.)
This rare and crude type, not listed in the SCWC, was struck on the island of Sardinia in the waning days of Hapsburg rule there. Upon the death of Charles II of Spain in 1700 and the extinction of the Spanish Hapsburgs, the island passed through various hands until becoming a possession of the dukes of Savoy, who took the title of king of Sardinia in 1718.
