This specimen was lot 1154 in Ponterio sale 158 (New York, January 2011), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Sardinia. 10 Reales, 1684. Dark toned, nice strike. EXTREMELY FINE." This rare and crude type was struck on the island of Sardinia in the waning days of Hapsburg rule there. Upon the death of Charles II of Spain in 1700 and the extinction of the Spanish Hapsburgs, the island passed through various hands until becoming a possession of the dukes of Savoy, who took the title of king of Sardinia in 1718.
