Stack's Bowers November 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 78125

This specimen was lot 78125 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Sardinia. 3 Cagliarese, 1671/6. Charles II of Spain. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, EF Details. From the Richard August Collection." This obscure type was struck by the Spanish 1668-95 for the island of Sardinia. Numista says this coin was 1/100 of a scudo. Upon the death of Charles II of Spain in 1700 and the extinction of the Spanish Hapsburgs, the island passed through various hands until becoming a possession of the dukes of Savoy, who took the title of king of Sardinia in 1718.
