Sarawak 1896-H cent
This specimen was lot 58376 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "SARAWAK. Cent, 1896-H. Birmingham (Heaton) Mint. Charles J. Brooke. PCGS Genuine--Altered Surfaces, Unc Details. From the Selvaraj Collection." Sarawak, a British colony on the northwest coast of Borneo, was ruled by a dynasty of white rajahs from 1841 to 1946. This type was issued 1892-97 from Heaton, along with a half cent and quarter cent. It is common in low grade but expensive in nice condition. It superseded a cent without a hole (KM 6). Silver five cents, ten cents and fifty cents were added in 1900.
