This specimen was lot 73150 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAN MARINO. 5 Scudi, 1997-R. Rome Mint. NGC PROOF-67 Ultra Cameo. Mintage: 5,500 (though 469 melted at the mint). Celebrating the Annunciation, this vibrant proof issue presents robust brilliance and a dazzling cameo nature on each side." San Marino is in the Italian Apennines and is a protectorate of Italy but remains independent. It used the obsolete scudo as the denomination for its gold commemoratives. The five scudi was 15 g in 1976, then lowered to 10 g in 1983, and then raised to 16.95 g in 1986. This type was struck in Rome. San Marino now uses the euro.
