Salzburg 1788-M thaler Dav-1264
This specimen was lot 6415 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Salzburg. Taler, 1788-M. Hieronymus von Colloredo-Waldsee. PCGS MS-63. A well made Taler with molten gray surfaces and a great deal of remaining brilliance. Overall quite lovely in its appearance and worthy of a strong bid." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type of 1787-89 is common. The Archbishop is most remembered as the first patron of Mozart but grew irritable when Mozart demanded better status than a mere employee.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
