JE159-1174r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1174 in Jean Elsen sale 159 (Brussels, June 2024), where it sold for €120 (about US$154 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SAINT EMPIRE, SALZBOURG, Archevêché, Jérôme de Colloredo (1772-1803), AR Taler, 1787. D/ B. à d. R/ Armoiries. Très Beau. (Holy Roman Empire, archbishopric of Salzburg, Hieronymus von Colloredo, 1772-1803, silver thaler of 1787. Obverse: bust right; reverse: arms. Very fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type of 1787-89 is common. The Archbishop is most remembered as the first patron of Mozart but grew irritable when Mozart demanded better status than a mere employee. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver.
