Salzburg 1780-M 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 1554 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$304 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Hieronymus von Colloredo, 1772-1803. 1/2 Konventionstaler 1780, Salzburg. Mit der Signatur M (Franz Matzenkopf der Jüngere, Stempelschneider in Salzburg, 1755-1805). Vorzüglich-FDC. NGC MS60. Feine Patina. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Hieronymus von Colloredo, 1772-1803, half convention thaler of 1780, Salzburg mint, with engraver's initial "M". Extremely fine-uncirculated, Nicely toned.)"
This type was struck 1772-82 and is a common half thaler. The Archbishop is most remembered as the first patron of Mozart but grew irritable when Mozart demanded better status than a mere employee. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 14.03 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 13.98 g.
