This specimen was part of lot 3178 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), which sold for €130 (about US$168 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Sigismund III. von Schrattenbach, 1753-1771. Einseitiger Pfennig 1753, 1755, 1756, 1760, 1763, 1765, 1768, 1769, 1770, 1771. Probszt 2373, 2374, 2375, 2376, 2377, 2378, 2379, 2380, 2381, 2382; Zöttl 3101, 3102, 3103, 3104, 3105, 3106, 3107, 3108, 3109, 3110. 10 Stück., Sehr schön und besser. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Sigismund III of Schrattenbach, 1753-71, uniface pennies of 1753-71. Ten pieces, very fine and better.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1753-56, 1760-65, 1768-71 and has a low catalog value. Four pfenninge made a kreuzer and 120 kreuzer made a convention thaler. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver or billon.

Catalog reference: KM 366; Probszt 2382; Zöttl 3110.
