Künker sale 384, lot 3165

This specimen was lot 3165 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €320 (about US$414 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Sigismund III. von Schrattenbach, 1753-1771. 1/4 Konv.-Taler 1767. R Hübsche Patina, min. justiert, vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Sigismund III of Schrattenbach, 1753-71, quarter convention thaler of 1767. Rare, handsome patina, minor adjustment marks, extremely fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1767 only. This example realized double the catalog value. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7.02 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 7.03 g.

Catalog reference: KM 417; Probszt 2314; Zöttl 3029 (Type 2).
