Steve Album sale 54, lot 2369

This specimen was lot 2369 in Steve Album Auction 54 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2026), where it sold for $204. The catalog description[1] noted, "SALZBURG: Johann Ernst von Thun, 1667-1709, AR 3 kreuzer, 1690, St. Rupert with salt box at right hand and crozier at left hand, struck from roller dies, a wonderful lustrous mint state example! NGC graded MS64." This type was struck in 1687-92 and has a low catalog value. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
