Salzburg 1690-IE 1/2 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 3010 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €300 (about US$388 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Johann Ernst von Thun und Hohenstein, 1687-1709. Einseitiger 1/2 Kreuzer Einseitiger 1/2 Kreuzer 1688, 1689, 1690, 1691, 1693, 1695, 1696, 1697, 1698, 1699, 1700, 1702, 1703, 1705, 1706, 1707, 1708, 1709. Probszt 1902-1912, 1914, 1915, 1917-1921; Zöttl 2267-2278, 2280, 2281, 2283-2287. 18 Stück., Sehr schön und besser. 1697: Exemplar der Auktion Bankhaus Partin 33, München 1991, Nr. 1383. 1703: Exemplar der Auktion Bankhaus Partin 33, München 1991, Nr. 1385. The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1687-1709 and has a low catalog value. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
