Salzburg 1561 ducat Fr-616
This specimen was lot 3468 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,146 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DIE GEISTLICHKEIT IN DEN HABSBURGISCHEN ERBLANDEN, Johann Jakob Khuen von Belasi, 1560-1586. Dukat 1561. GOLD. R Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Austrian church states, archbisopric of Salzburg, Johann Jakob Khuen von Belasi, 1560-1586, ducat of 1561. Scarce, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type is listed for 1561-66; it was accompanied by quadruple (Fr-615), triple (Fr-616) and double ducats (Fr-617). In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
