SB1122-75608r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75608 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 2 Kopeks, 1914-CNB. St. Petersburg Mint. Nicholas II. NGC MS-65 Brown. From the final year of issue for this type, this Gem 2 Kopeks showcases radiant satin luster on both sides. Rich olive and brown tone blends with fine mottling of deep blue. Overtones of sapphire and traces of mint red around the devices complete the look, resulting in superb eye appeal from every angle." This type is listed for 1867-71, 1876-1914. Ekaterinburg also struck this type 1867-76 (Y10.1). The nineteenth century dates are scarce in nice condition but the later dates are common with, of course, the exception of the proofs. In 1914, Russia plunged into World War One, which conflict would lead to the destruction of the regime.

Recorded mintage: 20,000,000 plus proofs, a common date.

Specification: 6.6 g, copper.

Catalog reference: KM-Y10.2.
