Sincona sale 5, lot 31

This specimen was lot 31 in Sincona sale 5 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 22,000 CHF (about US$27,071 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RUSSLAND Rubel 1914, St. Petersburg BC. 200-Jahrfeier der Schlacht von Gangut. Av. Geharnischtes, belorbeertes Brustbild Peters I. nach rechts. Rv. Gekrönter Doppeladler mit Georgswappen auf der Brust, in den Fängen und den Schnäbeln Landkarten haltend. Sehr selten. Min. Kr. Fast FDC aus Polierter Platte. (Russia, ruble of 1914, St. Petersburg mint. Bicentennial of the Battle of Gangut. Obverse: armored, laureate bust of t Peter the Great to right; reverse: crowned double-headed eagle with St. George on its breast; charts in claws. Very rare, light hairlines, nice uncirculated struck on a polished planchet.)"

Most must have been melted as the type is rare today. The last czarist ruble was issued in 1915.
