Russia 1888-AG ruble Dav-292
This specimen was lot 41353 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. Ruble, 1888-AT. St. Petersburg Mint. NGC MS-61. Displaying a bold, full strike with obverse surfaces that are prooflike and brilliant save for some scattered gray tone. The reverse, more satiny in appearance, displays pale russet coloration along portions of the peripheries." This type was struck for Alexander III 1886-94. The type must have been subjected to extensive melting as all dates are rare. In 1886, the ruble was reduced to 20 grams after having been fixed at 20.73 grams since 1798.
