Sincona sale 19, lot 855

This specimen was lot 855 in Sincona sale 19 (Zürich, October 2014), where it sold for CHF 16,000 (about US$20,051 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Rouble 1879, St. Petersburg Mint, HФ. Rare as a proof. Brilliant proof with most attractive patina." This type was struck 1859-85 in respectable quantities but not so many as the prior type (Dav-283). This specimen realized five times the catalog value for a proof. Assayer's initials HΦ = Nicolai Follendorf.

Recorded mintage: 611,000.
