Sincona sale 97, lot 2210

This specimen was lot 2210 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 110 CHF (about US$160 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RUSSLAND Kaiserreich und Föderation, Alexander II. 1855-1881, 5 Kopecks 1869, Ekaterinburg Mint, EM. Bitkin 394. Schön-sehr schön. Doppelschlag und Dezentrierung. (empire of Russia, Alexander II, five kopeks of 1856, Ekaterinburg mint. Fine-Very Fine, Double struck and off-centered.)"

The Russian government does not seem to have been able to make up its mind whether the five kopeks denomination should be a small silver coin or a large copper coin, as here. Today, the silver piece is readily available (probably due to hoarding) but the copper type is hard to find in nice condition. This type was struck 1867-81 and 1911-12. The Ekaterinburg mint closed in 1876.

Recorded mintage: 20,277,000.

Specifications: 16.38 g, copper, 32.7 mm diameter, this specimen 15.23 g.

Catalog reference: KM Y12.1, Bitkin 318.
