Russia 1861-SP MI 5 kopeks
This specimen was lot 429 in Sincona sale 84 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 28,000 CHF (about US$37,705 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RUSSIA Russian Empire and Federation, 5 Kopecks 1861, St. Petersburg Mint, SPB MI. Extremely rare. 25 roubles according to Petrov. 40 roubles according to Ilyin. NGC MS62. Beautiful condition with magnificent patina. From the Soedermann Collection, auction SINCONA 7, Zürich, October 2012, lot 1340 (price realized: CHF 30,000)."
This type was struck 1860-66. Mintmasters МИ and ФБ are reported for 1861. In 1867, the weight was reduced to 0.90 g, 0.500 fine silver and struck in that form until the collapse of the regime. In the 1860's, the regime struck this denomination in silver (shown here) and copper (KM Y6a).
