from the Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale, lot 24731
Russia SB118-24731r.jpg

This specimen was lot 24731 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. Ruble, 1747-CNB. Elizabeth (1741-61). PCGS VF-35 Secure Holder. No colon at end of Obverse legend; Reverse legend has dots after both words. Dark toned." The coinage of Russia of the eighteenth century is a confusing and fascinating subject. This type, issued 1743-51 from St. Petersburg and 1742-51 from Moscow, is fairly common. The rubles of Peter II were about 28 grams but this type seems to be only 26 grams. Mintmaster initials were added after 1751.

Recorded mintage: 803,000, including the 1747/44 overdate.

Specification: 25.85 g, 0.802 fine silver.
