Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale, lot 75261
SB222-75261r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75261 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 10 Kopeks Novodel, 1713-MA. Kadashevsky Mint. Peter I (the Great). PCGS SPECIMEN-58. Precisely struck and entrancingly beautiful, this steely gray Novodel is exceptionally attractive and entirely desirable accounting to the nature of the restrike." This rare early dime is not priced in the SCWC. It is quite possible that all survivors are novodels, or later restrikes. This weight standard would not be maintained for long; the weight dropped to 2.66 g in 1726, 2.59 g in 1731 and 2.4 g in 1746. The opening of copper mines in the Urals caused large quantities of ten kopeks to be made in that metal.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 2.80 g, 0.750 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-147; Bit-H767.
