Rostock 1624-HD thaler Dav-LS385
This specimen was lot 4247 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €32,000 (about US$41,875 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ROSTOCK, STADT. Breiter Reichstaler 1624, auf die Geburt und Taufe des Prinzen Christian von Mecklenburg-Schwerin. MON · NOV · ROSTOCH · AD · LEG · IMP · IN · PVBL · PROV · LÆTIT · Behelmtes und verziertes Stadtwappen mit je fünf Fahnen an den Büffelhörnern//: Q : F : F : Q : / SIT · ILLVSTRIS · / PRINC · ADOLPHI · / FRIDERICI · FILIVS . / PRIMOGENITVS · NA / SCITVR · I · DECEMBER / AN : M : DC : XXIII · ET · SA / CRO · FONTE · RENAS / CITVR · XIIX · IANVA · / AN : XXIV · VIVAT, darunter die Signatur : HD : (verbunden, Hans Detloff, Münzmeister in Rostock 1623-1629) zwischen Arabesken. The city of Rostock was under the sovereignty of the dukes of Mecklenburg but claimed the mint right as a member of the Hanseatic League. Her issues in the seventeenth century are sparse and expensive. Another thaler, Dav-5786, was struck n 1624 using dies of normal diameter.
