Rostock H3064-30906r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30906 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $9,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Rostock. City Taler (32 Schilling) 1612 MS63 NGC. Struck with the titles of Holy Roman Emperor Matthias. Magnificent quality for this rare taler, boasting flashy luster over both sides and an eye-catching arrangement of rainbow tone that radiates the legends, providing a superb frame for the well-preserved centers. The single finest example of this type that has been graded by NGC to date and easily the most visually superb example that appears in archived auction records. Worthy of a strong bid thus! From the Jamestown Collection." The SCWC lists this type for 1612-13 and 1618 along with numerous other thalers from the 1620's and 1630's but all are scarce to rare. The city of Rostock was under the sovereignty of the dukes of Mecklenburg but claimed the mint right as a member of the Hanseatic League. Her issues in the seventeenth century are sparse and expensive.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-5784; KM 17.
