Künker sale 335, lot 4246

This specimen was lot 4246 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €28,000 (about US$36,641 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ROSTOCK, STADT. Breiter 1 1/2 facher Reichstaler 1605, auf die Erbhuldigung für Herzog Karl von Mecklenburg am 27. August. IN : A : MAIORIB ·9 VIRTUTE : PARTO : PRECIOSA : POSSESSIO : EST (Münzmeisterzeichen des Joachim Köneke) Behelmtes und verziertes Stadtwappen mit sechs bzw. fünf Fahnen an den Büffelhörnern//NON : BENE : PRO : TOTO : LIBERTAS : VENDITUR : AURO : 1605 · Gekrönter Doppeladler, auf der Brust Reichsapfel. Von großer Seltenheit. Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, sehr schön +. (Germany, city of Rostock. Broad 1½ thaler of 1605, in homage to the duke of Mecklenburg. Obverse: helmeted arms; reverse: crowned imperial eagle with orb on chest. Very rare, attractive example with handsome patina, very fine or better.)"

The city of Rostock was under the sovereignty of the dukes of Mecklenburg but claimed the mint right as a member of the Hanseatic League. Her issues in the seventeenth century are sparse and expensive.
