Künker sale 335, lot 4248

This specimen was lot 4248 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,402 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ROSTOCK, STADT. Reichstaler (32 Schilling) 1637, mit Titel Ferdinands III. Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, winz. Randfehler, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, city of Rostock. Thaler of 1637, in the name of Ferdinand III. Attractive example with handsome patina, edge defects, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The city of Rostock was under the sovereignty of the dukes of Mecklenburg but claimed the mint right as a member of the Hanseatic League. Her issues in the seventeenth century are sparse and expensive. Another thaler, Dav-5794, was struck in the name of Ferdinand II.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28,40 g.
