Romania 1940 100 lei Fr-17
This specimen was lot 3487 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 110,000 CHF (about US$147,213 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "RUMANIEN, Carol II. 1930-1940. 100 Lei 1940, Bukarest. Auf das 10-jährige Regierungsjubiläum. Sehr selten. Nur 346 Exemplare geprägt. NGC MS64. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar (Romania, Charles II, 1930-40, one hundred lei of 1940, Bucharest mint, on the tenth anniversary of the reign. Very rare. Only 346 pieces struck, Finest certified by NGC)." This type is not listed in the regular SCWC. It was likely a presentation piece. It is difficult to imagine gold coins circulating in post-World War One Romania.
