This specimen was lot 20456 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "ROMANIA. 50 Bani, 1884-B. Bucharest Mint. Carol I. PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. Tied with just four others for the finest certified in the PCGS census, this shimmering near-Gem features some subtle golden toning along with a great deal of lustrous brilliance." This is a two year type of which the 1885-B is rare. In 1884, the Bucharest mint also struck a five bani, one leu and five lei.
Recorded mintage: 1,000,000, an uncommon date.
