Künker sale 405, lot 3310
from the Stack's Bowers February 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 75093
SB225-75093r.jpg

The first specimen was lot 3310 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €90 (about US$118 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS JOSEF II., 1765-1790. Kurant- und Scheidemünzen aus der Zeit des Kaisers Josef II. 10 Kreuzer 1781, mit Titel Josefs II. Münzmeister Georg Christoph Busch. Mit geteilter Jahreszahl an der oberen Kante des Rokokopodest. Beckenbauer 7505; Slg. Bach (Auktion Künker 238) 4903. Etwas fleckige Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (city of Regensburg, ten kreuzer of 1781, struck in the name of Joseph II. Spotty patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The second specimen was lot 75093 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. Regensburg. 10 Kreuzer, 1781-B. Regensburg mint. Free City. PCGS MS-64." With the introduction of the convention thaler in the mid eighteenth century, one mark was ten thalers and one thaler was 120 kreuzer. This type was struck 1781 only but is fairly common in circulated condition. Despite the tiny reported mintage, the SCWC reports four major varieties for 1781: KM 439 (eagle without sword or orb), KM 440 (eagle holds sword and orb), KM 441 (date moved to above pedestal, shown here), KM 442 (eagle without sword or orb). We aren't sure that KM 439 and KM 442 exist for this date as we find no examples in the auction records.

Recorded mintage: 3,600.

Specification: silver, the first specimen 3,88 g.

Catalog reference: KM 441.
