Regensburg 1737 thaler Dav-2609
This specimen was lot 3202 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$7,217 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS KARLS VI. Reichstaler 1737 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1716 geändert), mit Titel Karls VI. 29,11 g. Münzmeister Johann Michael Federer. Stempelschneider Christoph Daniel Oexlein. Mit im Stempel getilgter Stempelschneidersignatur. Mit schrägem Riffelrand. Stadtschlüssel in Barockkartusche mit Fruchtzweigen und Rankenwerk, unten beiderseits Münzmeisterzeichen Flügel (Johann Michael Federer, Münzmeister in Regensburg, 1700-1740)//Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit Lorbeerkranz, auf der Schulter Löwenmaske. Von größter Seltenheit. Laut Münzakten nur 82 Exemplare geprägt. Prachtexemplar. Feine Patina, kl. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (city of Regensburg, thaler of 1737, struck in the name of Charles VI, 1737/16 overdate, obliquely reeded edge. Obverse: City keys in a baroque cartouche with fruit branches and tendrils, mint master's mark on the bottom on both sides (Johann Michael Federer, mint master in Regensburg, 1700-1740); reverse: Armored and laureate bust right, lion mask on the shoulder. Extremely rare, 82 examples struck, cabinet example, fine patina, light planchet defects, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This type was struck 1714, 1716 and 1737. Note the baroque cartouche on the obverse.
