Künker sale 405, lot 3170

This specimen was lot 3170 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €420 (about US$551 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS LEOPOLDS I. 1/4 Reichstaler 1680 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1672 geändert), mit Titel Leopolds I. Münzmeister Michael Federer, der ließ die Signatur seines Vaters Hieronymus Federer (HF) durch seine Initialen MF im Stempel ersetzen. Von großer Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön. (city of Regensburg, quarter thaler of 1680, struck in the name of Leopold I, 1680/72 overdate. Mintmaster Michael Federer had his father Hieronymus Federer's initials (HF) replaced with his initials MF in the die. Extremely rare, handsome patina, very fine.)"

None of the quarter thalers of the seventeenth century are common altho they were struck fairly steadily after 1626. This type was struck 1665-67, 1672 and 1680.
