Künker sale 353, lot 3577

This specimen was lot 3577 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €45 (about US$63 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 1 Guter Pfennig 1779, A, Berlin. Prägung für die Mark Brandenburg. Mit dem Münzstättenzeichen auf der Vorderseite und der Jahreszahl auf der Rückseite. Sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Münzzentrum 101, Köln 1999, Nr. 3383. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, guter pfennig of 1779, Berlin mint, struck for the mark of Brandenburg, with mintmark on the obverse and the date on the reverse. Very fine.)"

This type was struck in substantial quantities 1771-86 at the Berlin mint. The "guter" in the name indicates that it was "good silver", if only a trace, as here. Altho the regime made several attempts to switch this denomination to copper, billon pfennig were struck as late as 1806.

Recorded mintage: 645,276.

Specification: 0.65 g, 0.052 fine silver, 14 mm diameter, this specimen is 0,60 g.
