Prussia 1749-CHI ducat Fr-2371
This specimen was lot 3335 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €12,000 (about US$16,701 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. Dukat 1749, CHI, Berlin. Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit umgelegtem Mantel und Ordensband//Gekrönter Adler mit Zepter und Reichsapfel in den Fängen über Waffen, darüber die geteilte Jahreszahl 17 - 49, unten die Signatur C · H · I (Christoph Henning Jaster, Münzmeister in Berlin 1749-1764). GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Min. gewellt, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Schweizerischer Bankverein 15, Basel 1986, Nr. 334. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, ducat of 1749, Berlin mint. Obverse: armored and mantled bust with order sash; reverse: crowned eagle with scepter and orb in its claws flies over trophies of war, date above and initials below. Extremely rare, slightly wavy, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1749 only and is very rare. Issues of ducats in Prussia, never prolific, dwindled after the introduction of the frederick d'or in the 1740's.
