Prussia 1720-IGN 1/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 3729 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,664 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich Wilhelm I. der Soldatenkönig, 1713-1740. 1/3 Taler 1720, IGN, Berlin. Variante mit breiterem Brustbild und anderem Harnisch. R Min. Prägeschwäche, vorzüglich. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William, 1713-40, one third thaler of 1720, Berlin mint. Scarce, slightly weakly struck, extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1719-23 and 1727-29 but only in small quantities. The one-third thaler or half gulden was reduced in weight and fineness in 1741 and struck in large numbers after 1758.
