The specimen shown is from a type struck in Portugal 1989-2001. Many dates were minted only for collector sets. The denomination was made obsolete when Portugal converted to the euro. Explorer Pedro Nuñes is honored on the reverse.
Recorded mintage: 14,500,000.
Specification: 8 g, bimetallic, aluminum bronze center in copper-nickel ring, 25.5 mm diameter, designed by José Candido.
