Portugal 1989 100 escudos KM-647
This specimen was lot 31152 in Heritage auction 3096 (Dallas, TX, March 2021), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "Portugal: Republic gold Proof "Discovery of Madeira" 100 Escudos 1989-INCM PR70 Ultra Cameo NGC. Denoting the discovery of the archipelago of Madeira, this commemorative issue features the Santa María at full sail. From the Paramount Collection." This is one of many NCLT's issued to celebrate the glories of Portugal's past. It was issued in copper-nickel, silver, gold and palladium.
Recorded mintage: 2,000,000 in copper-nickel, 50,000 in silver (plus 20,000 silver proofs), 2,996 in gold and 2,500 in palladium.
Specification: KM 647: copper-nickel, 34 mm diameter; KM 647a: 21 g, 0.925 fine silver; KM 647b: 24 g, 0.916 fine gold, AGW 0.7075 oz; KM 647c: 31.12 g, 0.999 fine palladium.
