The specimen shown is from a type struck in Portugal to commemorate the rounding of the Cape of Good Hope by Bartholomeu Dias in 1488. It was also issued in various precious metals. The denomination was made obsolete when Portugal converted to the euro.

Recorded mintage: 1,000,000 (KM 642) plus 50,000 + 20,000 proofs in silver (KM 642a) plus 5,503 in gold (KM 642b) plus 2,000 + 907 proofs in platinum (KM 642c).

Specification: copper-nickel, 34 mm diameter.
