This specimen was lot 31151 in Heritage auction 3096 (Dallas, TX, March 2021), where it sold for $1,500. The catalog description[1] noted, "Portugal: Republic gold Proof "Diogo Cão" 100 Escudos 1987-INCM PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC. Mintage: 5,387. A commemorative issue celebrating the golden age of Portuguese discoveries, specifically the famed explorer Diogo Cão, who was the first European to navigate the West African coast near Gabon. AGW 0.7075 oz. From the Paramount Collection." This is one of many NCLT's issued to celebrate the glories of Portugal's past. It was issued in copper-nickel, silver and gold.
Recorded mintage: 1,000,000 in copper-nickel, 20,000 in silver (plus 50,000 silver proofs), 5,387 + 5,256 proofs in gold.
