Aureo y Calicó sale 422, lot 3454

This specimen was lot 3456 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 371 € (about US$480 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Portugal. 1991. 200 ecu. Navegadores. Acuñación de 2500 ejemplares. En estuche oficial con certificado [navigators, 2,500 examples minted, in official box with certificate. AU. Proof." The Lisbon mint demonetized this coin upon issue. The ecu ("European Currency Unit") was a proposed unit of currency that later developed into the euro. Several countries (especially Belgium) minted NCLT's to promote the unit.
