This specimen was lot 34519 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ireland: Republic gold Proof 50 Ecu 1990 PR69 PCGS. An aurous example with jet-black fields that reveal only the most minor hints of handling, just precluding utter perfection." The ECU (European Currency Unit) was a proposed coin in the early '90's which later evolved into the euro. Several countries issued ECU's but, as they never became legal tender, the coins remain medallic in nature.

Recorded mintage: 5,000.

Specification: 15 g, 0.917 fine gold, 28 mm diameter, AGW 0.4422 oz.

Catalog reference: KM-X3.
