This type was struck at Dublin for Ireland in 1990 and 1994-2000 to replace a currency note used heretofore. The 1990 is the most common date. The coin was demonetized in 2002 when Ireland joined the euro. A red deer (known as an elk or wapiti in the United States) appears on the reverse.

The Irish Currency Office in Dublin began production of currency in 1974 and coins in 1976; previously, these items had been contracted in Britain.

Recorded mintage: 62,292, 000 plus 42,000 proofs.

Specification: 10 g, copper-nickel, 31.1 mm diameter, designed by Thomas Ryan.
