The specimen shown is from a type struck in Portugal 1963-86. The denomination was terminated in 2000, inflation having rendered it worthless. The handsome caravel obverse design also appears on 2½ escudos (KM 590) and ten escudos (KM 600) of the same period. A few of the early dates are scarce but the remainder, including this one, are common.
Recorded mintage: 46,794,000.
