Portugal 1924 escudo rev DSLR.jpg

In 1910, Portugal, having ousted her king, dropped the réis and adopted the escudo, divided into 100 centavos. This type, struck 1924 and 1926, is rather scarce with the 1926 being rare. It superseded an silver type struck 1915-16 (KM 564) and in turn was replaced by a copper-nickel coin (KM 578) struck 1927-68. It was accompanied by a similar fifty centavos (KM 575). The escudo was retired in 1999 when Portugal joined the euro.

Recorded mintage: 2,709,000.

Specification: aluminum-bronze.

Catalog reference: KM 576.
