Portugal 1847 500 reis
The first specimen was lot 1551 in Jean Elsen sale 121 (Brussels, June 2014), where it sold for €80 (about US$128 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PORTUGAL, Maria II (1834-1853), AR 500 reis, 1847. Belle patine. Superbe. (kingdom of Portugal, Maria II (1834-53), silver 500 réis of 1847, nice patina, extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1837-53 in limited numbers. Tho listed fairly cheaply in the SCWC, it is seldom seen. Maria II reigned 1834-53 after overcoming the usurpation of her uncle Miguel I. The next silver five hundred réis struck (KM 494 of 1855-56) was only 12.5 grams.
