SB824-42531r.jpg

This specimen was lot 42531 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Low Mintage Lisbon Mint 6400 Reis, PORTUGAL. Peca (6400 Reis), 1815. Lisbon Mint. Joao as Prince Regent. NGC MS-63. The finest of just four observed in the NGC population report, this Choice specimen glistens with an abundance of vibrant brilliance and flair, with a delightful hint of toning around the devices and stunning luster apparent in the fields. Given the paucity of the output for the year at Lisbon, it is easy to see that this example may represent the apex of what one can reasonably discover." Other dates for this type include 1805-09 and 1812-13. Similar coins were struck in Brazil. On the death of his mother in 1816, João dropped the title of Prince Regent and became king.

Recorded mintage: 305.

Specification: 14.34 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-123; KM-336.
