This specimen was lot 967 in Ponterio sale 164 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $356.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 400 Reis, 1746. João V (1706-50). Marked as 400 Reis but in fact equal to 480 Reis. Legend separated by crosses. Several light scratches on the reverse, EXTREMELY FINE." This cruzado novo was raised from 400 réis to 480 réis in the devaluation of 1749. The type, struck 1718-48, has a low catalog value but is seldom seen.

Specification: 1.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .031 troy oz AGW, reeded edge, 14 mm diameter.
