This specimen was lot 12238 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $705. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 1,000 Reis, 1733. João V (1706-50). Small dig under date. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." This type was struck in Lisbon 1707-47 and is often listed as a quartinho, probably because it was one quarter of a moeda d'ouro (4000 réis). It was officially worth 1000 réis but traded for 1200 réis. This is the first date issued of the type since 1722.
