Portugal (1656-63) 200 reis
This specimen was lot 73196 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 200 Reis (1/2 Cruzado), ND (1656-63). Lisbon Mint. Alfonso VI. NGC EF Details--Plugged. This silver piece exhibits a confident strike that gave the coin well-formed detail. The noted plug is at 11 o'clock, but was so skillfully done that it is difficult to spot. Limitedly handled, this example features a soft olive tint and plenty of brilliance." Alfonso VI was the second Portuguese king after the Spanish were expelled in 1640. This scarce type was struck without date. Many were counterstamped in 1663 to raise them to 250 réis. Hammered coins were produced at Porto, Lisbon and Évora, with Lisbon being the most available. Milled coinage was introduced in the 1680's.
