Pomerania 1763-IHL 2/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 73321 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Pomerania. Swedish Dominion. 2/3 Taler, 1763-IHL. Stralsund Mint. Adolph Friedrich. PCGS AU-50. Struck during the period of Swedish dominion in Pomerania, this lightly handled minor displays two wildmen on the reverse, each of whom is clad only in foliage-laden loin cloth and a medieval-style helmet. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." On the lapse of the dynasty in 1637, the duchy of Pomerania was contested between Sweden and Brandenburg until they agreed to partition it by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. As Sweden gradually weakened, Brandenburg (later Prussia) gradually nibbled away at the Swedish portion until the remainder was seized in 1815. This one year type is somewhat scarce.
