Pomerania 1689-ILA 1/6 thaler
This specimen was lot 11081 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Copenhagen, June 2026), where it sold for €149 (about US$172). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. Pomerania. 1/6 Taler, 1689-ILA. Stettin Mint. Karl XI. NGC VF Details--Scratches. Hole through the planchet by the king's name. From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922). Ex: P. Smidt Collection (Copenhagen - 1870/1874) Lot #186." On the lapse of the native dynasty in 1637, the duchy of Pomerania was contested between Sweden and Brandenburg until they agreed to partition it by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. As Sweden gradually weakened, Brandenburg (later Prussia) gradually nibbled away at the Swedish portion until the remainder was seized in 1815. This type was struck by the Swedish king in 1689 only and is very scarce. The SCWC also reports a very rare 1/6 thaler with a value reverse (KM 327).
