Sincona sale 5, lot 8

This specimen was lot 8 in Sincona sale 5 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 12,570 CHF (about US$15,689 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Pommern, Herzogtum. Karl XI. von Schweden, 1660-1697. Doppeldukat 1661, Stettin. Av. * CAROLVS. XI. D: G. REX. SVE. ET. DVX. STETI. PO Belorbeertes, geharnischtes Brustbild nach rechts. Rv.MONETA NOVA AURE – DVCATVS POMERA × - .16 - 61× Gekröntes, behelmtes, von zwei behelmten wilden Männern gehaltenes Wappen. Sehr selten. Hksp. Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Pomerania, Charles XI of Sweden, 1660-97, double ducat of 1661, Stettin mint. Obverse: laureate, armored bust to right; reverse: crowned, helmeted arms supported by two wild men of the forest. Very rare, mount removed, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck by the Swedish for their territories in Pomerania, on the south shore of the Baltic Sea. Prussia nibbled away at their holdings until seizing the remainder in 1815.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 7 g, 0.986 fine gold, .222 troy oz AGW; this specimen is 6,62 g.
